Also, you need to cover yourself well. You cannot wear shorts and dresses that reveal beyond the knee.
Last but not least, after all the old school places, you can catch a glimpse of the new Santo Domingo in Malecon. There is a thriving nightlife in George Washington Avenue. There will be gambling, sightseeing and if there is a foodie inside you, Malecon is the right place for you. Plus, do not get too excited at the sight of the water, it is probably not very clean according to recent sources.
